Islamic party leader Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar often called Cak Imin, wrote an article about ecology that had caused a stir in the community, entitled “Taubat Ekologis: Ikhtiar Hadirkan Keadilan Pembangunan,” in early 2024. The article was written during his running for Indonesia’s Vice President seat. He wrote this article because of his concern that development during the previous regime was often carried out without paying attention to the impact on the surrounding environment. In his writing, Cak Imin was inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’ on “ecological conversion” which is also in line with one of the verses recorded in the Quran Ar-Rum 41 regarding how humans should treat nature as fellow creations of God.
In Indonesia, learning from other religions is common in an effort to think about environmental sustainability. In this article, in addition to showing how humans should relate to God’s creation, Cak Imin also criticizes the government’s lack of seriousness towards the ecological crisis that is occurring in Indonesia, which can be seen from the minimal allocation of government funds towards nature protection in Indonesia and also various development policies that are carried out haphazardly. According to him, the government should show seriousness so that people also see that this ecological problem is not small because this ecological problem has a major effect on the sustainability of the next generation.
