Home is personal. It can appear differently for different people. For Balinese artist I Nyoman Nuarta, it is his nation, Indonesia, that he perceives as currently “under fire.” The material is like any other sculpture that Nuarta has created. It uses copper and brass. The theme of industrialization and the cruelty of the city is always behind his artwork. Now, he transfers such a tone into a house that is literally under fire.
Inside, a person is standing, raising his hands. He asked for help. But he couldn’t, because his feet appeared to be bound or trapped, either by ropes or metal loops. On the outside, almost all sides of the house were burnt. In the center, it was written “IN … SIA,” indicating that the fire had taken away part of the totality of the Indonesian identity.
This artwork is currently displayed in Nyoman’s exhibition, NuAart, in Bandung, West Java.
