“The Face of Flores’ Extractive Industries,” by Research Bureau of Rumah Baca Aksara

Research Bureau of Rumah Baca Aksara recently published an article on Islam Bergerak: Wajah Islam Progresif Indonesia (The Moving Islam: The Face of Progressive Islam in Indonesia) that aims to dismantle the capitalism-driven politics behind the expansion of mining and geothermal industries in Flores, East Indonesia. It questions the background, practices, and mission of such an industrial expansion. Moreover, the article takes further the Marxian lenses of primitive accumulation to ask readers to see who benefits from such an industry.

The article is divided into four sections. First, it explains the role of the state and capitalism in carrying out work, and the patterns and techniques of implementation for the development of extractive and geothermal industries in Flores. Second, it explains how the accumulation process of capitalism and labor support each other in this case. Third, it shows the facts of life in the communities around mining and geothermal areas that are staggeringly far from the “promises” of industrial capitalism and the state. Fourth, it calls on all points of resistance from various nodes to build a joint movement project going forward.

This article shows how among many Muslim people in Indonesia who tend to follow the government’s instructions and guidance, there is a small group like those involved in Islam Bergerak that are concerned with the government’s neoliberal tendency and speaks in a more disruptive manner toward the government. Such a voice is much more needed especially amid the recent turns where the government allows religious organizations, the two biggest ones are Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, to establish mining industries.
