Disaster is one of several themes that often came up in the conversation between religion, ecology, and colonialism in Indonesia. Teologi Bencana, a volume edited by Contextual theologian Zakaria J. Ngelow, published in 2019, explores this theme. Collecting 21 articles written by Christian theologians and environmental activists in the nation, this book tries to point out connections between ecological disaster and social disaster. The book includes (1) reflections on personal experience, (2) reinterpretations of scriptural texts, and (3) reconstructions of notions or theology, where many of them are based upon contextual reflection “from below” or what has been commonly understood as “lived theology.”

The book does not give a definite answer on what “disaster” is. Rather, it presents various resources and ways of answering it. For example, contextual theologian John Campbell-Nelson writes a personal reflection on the earthquake in Alor, suggesting that disaster means that the earth is “unsettled.” Another essay, particularly by Julianus Mojau, attempts to show that during a time of disaster, it is God who suffers, not only humans. The book is relevant for those who want to study the relationship between the Christian religion, ecology, and contextual theology.
